What to Bring to a Rocket Launch

QRS Rocket Launch Spectator Checklist

Watching or participating in a QRS Rocket Launch is very similar to attending any other outdoor event in Queensland. While there are other amenities nearby, the launching field is relatively exposed to the elements.

Below are listed several items that may make your time at the Rocket Launch safer and much more enjoyable.

PLEASE CONSIDER ALL OF THE BELOW LISTED ITEMS.

1. Personal Comfort & Safety

Hat & Sunglasses – Protect yourself from the Queensland sun.

Sunscreen (SPF 50+ or higher)  – Apply before arrival and reapply regularly.

Comfortable Clothing  – Lightweight, breathable fabrics are best; long sleeves can help with sun protection.

Closed-Toe Shoes – Recommended for walking across grass or rough terrain.

Camping or Picnic Chair  – Launches can last several hours, so bring something comfortable to sit on.

Light Jacket or Windbreaker – Conditions can change quickly, especially on open fields.

2. Food & Hydration

Plenty of Water – At least 1–2 litres per person; there’s usually no on-site supply.

Snacks or Packed Lunch – Launch days can run from morning to just past midday or early afternoon.

Insulated Cooler Bag – Optional, but handy if you want cold drinks.

3. Watching the Rockets

Binoculars – Great for tracking rockets higher than your eyes can comfortably follow.

Camera or Smartphone – Capture the action, but be mindful of safety zones.

Notepad & Pen – If you’re into logging launches or noting rocket types.

4. Weather Protection

Umbrella or Pop-Up Shade – There’s usually little or no shelter at launch sites. The shelter is allocated to the preparation of Rockets for flight, and access to these areas is prohibited for public safety.

Portable Ground Sheet / Blanket – For sitting or laying out gear.

Insect Repellent – Rural locations can have midges, mozzies, or flies.

Ear Protection (Optional) – Some high-power launches can be surprisingly loud.

Awareness of Launch Pads – Always know where active pads are located and avoid wandering into restricted zones.

6. Optional Extras

Small First Aid Kit  – For cuts, scrapes, or blisters.
